The current Mental Health Patient Care Unit and Day Treatment Program area at the Alberta Children’s Hospital does not meet the therapeutic or safety needs of the wide range of patients who rely on care in this space. In addition to minimal natural light, the unit often feels overcrowded and noisy – not optimal when caring for patients in need of various levels of sensory stimulation. With a 52% increase in the number of children requiring inpatient mental health care over the past year, there is an urgent need to address the known safety concerns for patients, family members, staff and physicians.
